October 16 thinking and making After our first studio session, I have begun to think about the relationship between dance and art in the making process. In order to source movement material my objective is not to explore thephysical ways into movement(movement tasks). I find myself contemplating tasks that integrate the body and mind, usually through artistic, sculptural or creative tasks. For example; allowing the body and mind to explore the texture of cloth. How it can consume or be consumed, how we can move within the restrictions of the cloth, the cloth as skin or as blank canvas for the body. By giving myself something other than movement to worry about, Iinstinctively move more freely and with authenticity. I have found that by taking dance out of the equation I find movement easier. Does anyone else feel the same way? Gx Talking about Coffee breakPlayful, inquisitive and comfortable. Our first playground activity was to use initiation and interference as a kind of ‘cause and affect’ improvisation method. Once we started we got into the pace and flow the momentum kicked in and movement felt fluid and enjoyable. Sadly the coffee ran dry all too quickly and the need for food took a hold – we were forced to pack up for the day and retreat to the comfort of the sofas upstairs to plan our next session. I was impressed by our ability to pick up where we left off, from our original partnering in the first year of the course. What a team! I’m thinking of setting up the next session in Starbucks...
